Provide medical administrative support in medical centres and be on call to work with RAF and civilian emergency response teams.

    Your Work

    Overview
Medical Assistants provide essential medical administrative support to the RAF. You’ll manage medical documentation, pull together teams for medical emergencies and provide some basic nursing care. You could work on the reception desk in a medical centre, booking appointments and keeping records up to date. It could also be your role to receive and store medical supplies in the dispensary. Medical Assistants have a clinical role as well. You’ll play a key part in the medical monitoring of aircrew by performing electrocardiograms. There are also opportunities to help care for patients being transferred from overseas back to the UK by air. You will also be trained in pre hospital emergency care skills and provide cover in the event of a road or air emergency, and for non-serious routine injuries. Like most people in the RAF, you’ll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour. Most of your tours will be in a medical centre on an RAF base in the UK, but there are also opportunities to work in hospital administration. Within your first few years, you’ll probably be detached overseas to carry out your role in tented accommodation. Detachments can last anything from a few days to a few months. On operations and exercises, Medical Assistants have an important clinical role and take on a lot of responsibility.

    Your First Tour

For your first tour, you’ll probably be posted to the medical centre on an RAF base, where you’ll work with a team of Medical Administrators to gain experience and confidence. You’ll organize appointments for doctors’ consultations, look after medical records and work with the stock control system for medical supplies. Additionally, you may be required to carry out the role of Duty Medical Assistant and be responsible for providing airfield crash cover and responding to other types of medical emergency.

    Your Training

    Recruit Training
Your career will start with 9 weeks of recruit training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The Course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.

    Specialist Training
The next step is 6 months of specialist training at the Defence Medical Services Training Centre at Aldershot in Hampshire. This training will provide an introduction to pre-hospital care. You’ll also be taught medical administration and some basic healthcare skills. At the end of the course, you’ll have gained a Health and Safety Executive Certificate in First Aid at Work and an Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care. This Apprenticeship consists of three individual qualifications: an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, a Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care and Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number. At the end of the course, you’ll get your first assignment.

    Ongoing Development
As your career progresses, we’ll continue to train you in new skills. There are courses which will qualify you to assist on aeromedical evacuations, and you can also be selected to train as a paramedic. As you progress in your career, additional Medical Administrator training will be provided which will enable you to take overall responsibility for the management of a medical centre.

    Your Future

    Prospects
You’ll initially join the RAF for a period of 9 years. After a year, you’ll be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman/woman if you pass a trade ability test. Further promotion to the rank of Corporal and beyond, and to the job of Medical Administrator, is by competitive selection.

    Transferable Skills
The qualifications you can earn are as valuable in the civilian world as they are in the RAF – which means that whenever you decide to leave the RAF, you’ll be well placed to find a job in medical administration or a related field.

    Age Limits
    17 years and 7 months – 29 years
