Analyse, design, deliver, facilitate and evaluate the training courses and activities that develop our most valuable resource – our people.

    Your Career

    Overview
The RAF operates at the cutting edge both technically and operationally – to maintain such a capability, there is a continuing need to develop the skills of all our personnel as well as seeking excellence through the continuous improvement of our operational and training processes. Our Training Officers are responsible for conducting training needs analyses, designing and developing training courses, and evaluating all aspects of training throughout the RAF. Moreover, experienced Training Officers often act in a consultancy or advisory role to further improve the existing training provision or to identify future training requirements. You could find yourself working at an RAF operational base, advising senior management on training policy and supporting a wide range of training development activities. You could also find yourself working in a specialist or joint Service environment, or in a deployed out-of-area Education and Training Centre, developing unique training programmes and making sure they meet the high standards we demand. Many Training Officers are involved in Media Operations, working directly with the media in operational theatres. You could also work as an instructor or flight commander at one of our training establishments, where you would be responsible for the overall development of our trainees; this could entail working with new recruits as well as more experienced RAF personnel.
To provide a fresh challenge, and to enable you to develop your skills as both a generalist and specialist, you will change jobs, known as posts or appointments, every few years. The time spent in any one post is known as a tour – and tour lengths vary from post to post – however, it is unlikely that a tour will be less than 18 months or longer than three years. Additionally, within your first few years of service, and subsequently, you may be detached overseas for anything from a few days to a few months.

    Your First Tour

For your first tour, you’ll normally work either at an operational unit, where you could be providing training advice and training support to a wide range of staff; or at one of our training establishments where you’ll be an instructor or a flight commander. Here, you’ll gain valuable first-hand experience of the techniques we use to train and develop our personnel as well as enhancing your own command, leadership and management skills - and training delivery competencies if you are in an instructional role. Support will be always be available from the Command Training, Education and Development staffs based at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, who will make staff advisory visits and organise regional seminars for you and other Training Officers. Irrespective of which station you are posted to, a common factor will be your involvement in facilitating Force Development activity. The Force Development initiative seeks to pull together all the various types of training in military skills, air power knowledge and leadership, to improve our performance both as war-fighters and as specialists. As a Training Officer, working alongside your Physical Education and RAF Regiment counterparts, much of your time will be spent analysing the unit’s training needs, determining the training interventions required to address those needs before, finally, evaluating the effect of this training and providing feedback to station executives.

    Second and Subsequent Tours
As you gain experience, you’ll be posted to ever-more demanding roles such as a Training Officer or Training Design Advisor on an operational squadron, or as a digital Station Training and Development Officer, where you might not have a more senior Training Officer working above you. After that, you may work as a staff officer at Command Headquarters or take up an “out-of-branch” appointment to broaden your competencies. You’ll be given a range of roles to prepare you for promotion to the next rank.

    Your Training

    Initial Officer Training
Like all our officers, you’ll begin your RAF career with Initial Officer Training at the RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire. You’ll follow a challenging 30-week course designed to develop your leadership and management skills. The course includes fitness development, military training and academic study as well as practical outdoor leadership challenges.

    Specialist Training
After Initial Officer Training, you’ll embark on a 10-week initial specialist course at the Defence Centre for Training Support, a training establishment based at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. Here, you’ll learn about how training is analysed, developed, delivered and evaluated in the RAF, as well as developing your presentational skills and honing your instructional technique. Part of the course will include a work-based project carried out on an RAF base. Upon successful completion of your initial specialist training, you’ll receive your first posting.

    Ongoing Development
As a Training Officer, you’ll have extensive opportunities for further career and personal development throughout your career. For example, you could learn how to design training courses and develop your training consultancy skills for more demanding roles – such as working as a specialist Training Design Advisor for a specific aircraft type. Additionally, after two years of productive service, you could have the opportunity to study for a training-related Masters degree. To complement your initial specialist training, you’ll also be offered the opportunity to participate in a structured and comprehensive Continuing Professional Development programme, aimed at enhancing your leadership skills and further honing your specialist skills as a trainer. As your career progresses, you’ll have the opportunity for further command and staff training, or to attend part-time Higher Education courses. Most higher-level training is accredited with certificate, diploma or masters level qualifications.

    Your Future

    Career Prospects
You’ll join the RAF on either a Short Service Commission of up to six years, or on a Permanent Commission that will normally require a minimum of 18 years’ service. Promotion to the rank of Flight Lieutenant is on a time served/satisfactory service basis. Further promotion to Squadron Leader and above is by competitive selection.

    Transferable Skills
The skills and experience you gain throughout your career as a Training Officer could equip you for a number of civilian jobs, including:
    • Strategic management and performance measurement.
    • University administrator.
    • Facilitator.
